Privacy policy
Effective date: October 6, 2026
The short version
- You never need an account, and we never ask who you are.
- Your ballot picks are saved only on your device. We cannot see them.
- The other choices you make on the Site, such as which endorsers to show, are saved only on your device too.
- We count visits with analytics tools set up to use no cookies, store nothing on your device and not follow you to other websites.
- We record how people use the Site only if they say yes when we ask. Anything you type is hidden from recordings, and you can turn recording off at any time.
- We do not sell personal information, show ads, or share data with campaigns, parties or endorsing organizations.
1. Who we are
Voter Guide Guru ("we", "us") operates voterguide.guru and its city sites, including sf.voterguide.guru (the "Site"). The Site is operated by Izac, LLC by Izac Ross, based in San Francisco, California. It is independent, self-funded, and not affiliated with any government agency, candidate, campaign, political party or endorsing organization.
Questions about this policy: contact@voterguide.guru.
2. Information we do not collect
We built the Site so that the most sensitive information never reaches us.
- Your address. The Site does not ask for it.
- Your ballot choices. Choices you mark in My ballot are stored in your browser on your device. They are not sent to us and we have no copy.
- Your identity. We do not ask for your name, do not offer accounts, and do not use voter registration records.
- Your registration. Links to register or check your registration take you to official government websites. We do not see what you enter there. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
3. Information we collect
Information you choose to send us. If you email us, including to report an error, we receive your email address and message. We use these only to investigate the report and reply to you.
Information collected automatically. When you visit, we and our service providers receive:
- Technical request data that every website receives: your IP address, browser and device type (user agent), the page requested, and the date and time. Our hosting provider processes this to deliver the Site and protect it from abuse.
- Usage data: which pages are viewed, the website that referred you, your screen size, browser and approximate location (city or region), and when someone follows a link to an official registration or election page or another site, or scrolls to the end of a page. These records do not include anything you type or choose on the Site.
We do not combine this information to identify you, and we do not build profiles of individual visitors.
4. How we use information
We use the information above to operate and secure the Site, to understand in aggregate how it is used so we can improve it, to fix errors that are reported, and to respond to people who contact us. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not use it to infer anyone's political views.
5. Analytics
We use two analytics services, PostHog and Google Analytics, to understand in aggregate which pages people use. Neither receives your ballot choices or anything you type.
PostHog
We use PostHog, a product analytics service provided by PostHog, Inc., to count visits. We have configured it as follows:
- No cookies. Page counts are sent by a short script of our own that saves nothing on your device. PostHog's own script loads only if you allow session recording (below).
- No persistent visitor ID. To estimate how many people visit in a day, PostHog's servers compute a one-way hash from your IP address, your browser's user agent, our site name and a random value that changes every day and is then deleted. The result cannot be used to recognize you from one day to the next or on other websites.
- IP addresses are not stored with analytics events.
- No automatic capture of clicks or form entries. We send only page views and the registration link clicks described in section 3.
- Only the page, never the rest of the web address. We record the page's path and drop everything after it, so nothing you enter or choose can end up in analytics. From the site that referred you, we keep only its domain.
Session recording, only if you allow it
The first time you visit, we ask whether we may record how you use the Site. Nothing is recorded unless you choose "Help us improve". If you do:
- PostHog records what appears on the page and how you move through it in that browser tab: scrolling, clicks, and which buttons and filters you use. We watch these recordings to find parts of the Site that are confusing or broken.
- Anything you type into a field is hidden before it leaves your browser. Network requests and their contents are not recorded.
- Your ballot choices are never recorded. The parts of the Site that show them are left out of recordings, and nothing is recorded while you view a shared ballot.
- PostHog keeps a random session ID in your browser's session storage, which the browser erases when you close the tab. It does not set cookies, and the recording is not linked to your name or to any other visit.
- Recordings are deleted after 30 days.
If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we never ask and never record. You can change your answer here:
PostHog processes this data on our behalf, on servers in the United States. PostHog's privacy information is at posthog.com/privacy (opens in a new tab).
Google Analytics
We also use Google Analytics, provided by Google LLC, to count visits. We have configured it as follows:
- No cookies and no visitor ID. We run Google Analytics with storage turned off (Google's "consent mode" with every type of storage denied), so it sets and reads no cookies and keeps nothing on your device. Google receives a separate, anonymous signal for each page view and counts visits only in aggregate.
- Only the page, never the rest of the web address. As with PostHog, we send the page's path and drop everything after it. From the site that referred you, we send only its domain.
- No advertising features. Google signals and ad personalization are off, and we do not link Google Analytics to any advertising account.
- IP addresses. Google Analytics uses your IP address to estimate your approximate location and then discards it; it does not store IP addresses.
Google's script loads from Google's servers, so Google receives the technical request data your browser sends with it (IP address and user agent). Google describes how it handles this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites (opens in a new tab).
If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, neither analytics tool loads and nothing is sent.
6. Service providers
We share information only with companies that help us run the Site, and only as needed for that purpose:
| Provider | What it does for us | Information it processes |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Hosting, content delivery, security, database | IP address, user agent and pages requested |
| PostHog, Inc. | Usage analytics | Page views and registration link clicks; session recordings only if you allow them (section 5) |
| Google LLC | Usage analytics (Google Analytics) | Page views and page interactions, without cookies or a visitor ID (section 5) |
| Email provider for contact@voterguide.guru | Receiving and sending email | Messages you send us |
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not disclose information to candidates, campaigns, political parties, endorsing organizations or data brokers.
We may disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a valid court order, or to protect the Site and its users from fraud or abuse. Because we hold so little, there is very little we could disclose.
7. Cookies and storage on your device
We do not use cookies. The Site saves the following in your browser's local storage so that it works as you expect:
- your ballot choices;
- the endorser filters you selected;
- whether you prefer the tiles or the grid view;
- your answer to the session recording question.
If you allow session recording, PostHog also keeps a random session ID in session storage until you close the tab (see section 5).
This information stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can erase your ballot choices at any time with the "Clear my ballot" button on the My ballot page, and all of it by clearing site data in your browser. Because it lives in one browser, it does not follow you to another browser or device.
8. Sharing your ballot
If you choose to create a share link, your choices are encoded in the link itself. Anyone who has the link can read them, and we cannot recall a link once you send it. The choices are placed in the part of the link that browsers do not transmit to our servers, so we do not receive them. Write-in names are not included in the link. Share a link only with people you want to see your choices.
9. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We do not track you over time or across other websites, and we do not allow other parties to do so through the Site. If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal or a Global Privacy Control signal, we send no analytics events for your visit.
10. How long we keep information
| Information | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Error reports sent by email | 12 months after the report is resolved, then deleted |
| Other email correspondence | 24 months after the last message |
| PostHog analytics events | 12 months, then deleted or aggregated |
| Google Analytics events | 2 months, then only aggregate reports remain |
| Session recordings (only if you allow them) | 30 days, then deleted |
| Hosting and security logs | As retained by Cloudflare under its own policies; we do not keep our own copies |
| Ballot choices, filter and view choices | On your device until you clear them |
11. Your choices and rights
- See, correct or delete what we hold. The only personal information we may hold about you is an email you sent us. Write to contact@voterguide.guru and we will tell you what we have, correct it, or delete it. We will respond within 30 days.
- Opt out of analytics. Turn on Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control in your browser. To stop session recording, use the control in section 5.
- Clear your device. Use "Clear my ballot" on the My ballot page, or clear site data in your browser.
We will not treat you differently for making any of these requests. California residents may have additional rights under California law; because we do not sell or share personal information and hold very little, the steps above are how those rights are exercised with us.
12. Children
The Site is intended for voters and people preparing to vote. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Security
The Site is served only over encrypted connections. Access to the email account where error reports arrive is limited to the Site's operator and protected by sign-in controls. No system is perfectly secure; the strongest protection we offer is that we do not collect your address, your identity or your ballot choices in the first place. If a breach affecting personal information occurs, we will notify affected people as the law requires.
14. Links to other sites
The Site links to endorsing organizations, news outlets and government election offices. We do not control those sites, and this policy does not cover them.
15. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new policy here and update the effective date. Earlier versions are available on request. If a change would reduce your privacy, it will not apply to information collected before the change.
